   The tale of two profiles...

In order to truly introduce myself using a profile picture, I must include both my Facebook and Twitter profile pictures. The image on the left is from my Facebook profile, and tells you a lot more about who I am as a person. In the picture you see myself and my ex-girlfriend (current fiancé), who I love very much. This picture is several years old, but I refuse to change it as my profile picture because it reminds me of times when we still had energy to go walk around downtown just because the weather was nice. You can see Buckingham Fountain lit up in the background. I love the city of Chicago for a number of reasons, and have yet to find a more beautiful city, especially when the skyline lights up at night. I have lived in the city for the past six years after growing up in a small town 45 minutes south of it. We love going out and seeing live music, and trying as many of the great restaurants we can. My fiancé and I bought our condo together three years ago, and finally got engaged about a month ago. I am a huge sports fan, and you can see in my picture I am wearing a White Sox hat and a "See Red" Chicago Bulls shirt. This shirt is a prized possession of mine, as I got it at the Bulls playoff game where Derrick Rose hit a shot at the buzzer to beat the Cavs. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. You'd have a hard time finding this profile, as I use a fake name and have the privacy settings turned all the way up. I have tried to keep this account as hidden as possible from the time I started applying for jobs after my professors shared horror stories of student teachers being kicked out of the program after their students had found their Facebook. I rarely post on Facebook, only using it to keep up with a few friends and staying up to date on news from my favorite bands. I don't share any personal information on the page, so I do not have a Facebook bio to share with you.

The picture on the left is from my Twitter profile, @MrThompsonCJHS, which I strictly use for professional purposes. This picture is from my brother's wedding, and is as professional looking as I get. My profile description is as follows: Former math teacher, current tech coordinator. "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." This pretty much sums it up. I spent the previous five years teaching middle school math before moving to my current position as the Tech Instruction Coordinator. I have loved working in my new role, supporting my co-workers and students with using technology in the classroom, and certainly still have a lot to learn. One of the best resources I've had for inspiration this year has been Twitter, so I'm excited to focus on using it and other social media throughout the rest of the course!

  1. Hello Thomas!
I completely understand your approach to Facebook. I also use a different version of my name and have all the privacy settings that anyone could ask for! I always think the way we approach social medias as teachers is super interesting. On the one hand I have heard the same story as student teacher and baby teacher that you could be doomed if students found your profile. Yet, on the other hand more and more schools and my families are looking towards different social media platforms to stay informed about their students and school community. I wonder how moving forward the online portfolio of a teacher will look ? As well as in the future do you think we will be asked to have two separate accounts on platforms ? Interested to hear your thoughts.

  2. You had me worried mid-sentence with "ex-girlfriend" then redeemed yourself with "finance"! Great to catch up on your profile, Jake. Looking forward to learning with you again.

  3. Hello Thomas! Congratulations on your engagement! It's nice to meet a fellow White Sox fan! I share your concerns regarding Facebook and I've gone ahead and deleted my profile. At a certain point, it just became too risky for me. I really like that quote you've shared. I firmly believe curiosity is one of the most powerful and important characteristics a person can have. I've worked in libraries for the past 5 years and I certainly sympathize with your role of supporting co-workers and users in their technology needs.
